The Evergreen Kitchen - Bangor, Maine.

Bringing the outdoors into the kitchen.

Walking into Melissa's new home for the first time, I was immediately taken aback by the view. The house is tucked away behind rows of well established evergreens that lovingly embrace the back of the house.

They offer great privacy and are also simply begging to be made the center of attention, so that is almost what we did, second to the kitchen of course.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Melissa, her travels had offered plenty of inspiration on the direction for the kitchen of her dreams. We selected colors based on the evergreens outside and a stunning set of curtains that were to be hung in the adjoining space. Melissa's incredible idea of replacing the wood burning stove with a Kakelugn was just inspired and I take my hat off to her for making that happen and am SO thrilled with the results.

The old kitchen had boxed lighting and a small window over the sink, a door to a small balcony that was taking up prime kitchen space, and even an office nook. The refrigerator divided the space from a perfect dining area that leads out onto a sizable deck. Reconfiguring all of that opened up the possibilities for a large open kitchen with an enormous island. It begged us to create the kitchen around windows that allowed the beautiful Maine sunlight to come flooding into the new heart of this perfectly situated home.

Melissa loves to cook and bake and display fruits, vegetables and dry goods; 'almost like a science lab' she said wistfully when we fist started planning. So when designing the kitchen we were constantly thinking of the loaf of warm bread on the counter, of reaching down to grab a bowl to display the local produce just collected at the market, and lots of glass doors to showcase the jars of herbs and ingredients waiting to inspire recipes, old and new.

We 'lived' the space as we brought it to life, and I think this really shows in the final result.

Thanks again Melissa for having me along for this heartwarming transformation.
