Oceanside House - Belfast, Maine.
A determination to restore this home from literally under the ground up resulted in a very special place to call home.
This home had been added on to, like most Maine homes have, but in a unique way. A second home, almost identical to the original had been tacked onto it. The house spent its most recent years as two separate apartments, sat atop one another, one with access from an exterior staircase. Two kitchens, two bathrooms in two houses back to back that were split top to bottom. Such a bizarre layout created a peculiar space and over the years, it had deteriorated dramatically, resulting in the need for a new foundation, but the LOCATION!! Clients (and good friends) Alana and Evan took on this worthy challenge and had me along for the journey.
Trying to straighten up this wonky old home was a huge undertaking, jacking it up onto stilts to repour the foundation, removing the siding and digging out the rot, it seemed like every job we started turned into a monumental hurdle to overcome, but overcome it we did. The walls came off, the floors came out (eventually) and we redesigned the layout to suit modern living. We added a room for a great kitchen, added staircase INSIDE and opened up the view with lots and lots of large windows. We slowly put Humpty Dumpty back together again and as monumental as it was, it was worth every single hurdle for the spectacular result.

I can't even really describe what it took to get this home to this stage, aside from to say it took a lot. Everyone worked so hard on this one and it paid off. We went again with a blank canvas of white throughout, wrapped the windows and did all we could to focus on the view from the house. We kept the rooms simple with minimal furniture as honestly, everyone will spend their time either enjoying the view OR outside IN the view. We focused on outdoor space comfort with a dining area on the floor level on the waterfront, a firepit and swing to enjoy the Ocean breeze and then added comfortable seating to the upper deck for evening gatherings watching the sunset. There isn't a bad view from this house and it sits majestically on a hill, elevated from all below, creating the most spectacular spot in Belfast to watch the world go by.
