Camp to Industrial Loft - Belfast, Maine
Modernizing a Maine camp into a New York style loft apartment.
This above garage apartment had been built as a place for the older kids to stay when family visited and had a solid nautical theme AND a red and green color scheme. To say it was a little dated is an understatement. Bringing it into the 21st Century was easy enough and reconfiguring the space for modern living was a joy.
The first step was to open up the space and create usable areas. Everything was originally squished into one corner, the kitchen was literally the tightest galley kitchen you've ever seen and bringing it into the main living area literally opened up all of the possibilities. Reconfiguring what was already there while maximizing the potential of the rooms that modern living uses, the loft quickly took on a personality of it's own.
The open loft-style ceiling with cross beams and the need for a railing on the stairs (after I'd removed a wall) led me down the industrial path. Old gate panels found at the local Trash to Treasure barn became part of the custom designed railing and after that, the industrial theme was realized and continued throughout. Custom welded iron Island unit legs, and concrete countertops added to the theme and inspired the custom light fixture, shelf brackets and wood store. These pieces united the space without overwhelming the softness of the wood panel ceiling and refinished hardwood floors, resulting in a welcoming, yet contemporary space.
The impressive bathroom took over an otherwise difficult room. Long and slim and originally used as an awkward bedroom, the room became a luxurious affair and the perfect place to spend an evening after a hike, or a lazy Sunday afternoon with a book and a glass of wine in the soaking tub. The room was shortened to create storage space and to add the laundry room, which had previously been in the low eaves of the kitchen and impossible to access comfortably.

For what was once a surplus space dressed with garden furniture and ghastly window treatments to really became a calm and welcoming home felt like such an epic achievement. The New York style loft apartment now boasts a fabulous layout for entertaining or gathering as a family, an incredible bathroom and is a fully functioning, livable space.
